Are you caught up with our Catalonia diary? If so you will already know our recent holiday there didn’t have the best weather. One day we knew the morning was going to be dry but rain was coming in the afternoon. So, we decided to get the train to the next town along, that way if the weather got too bad we could get back to our hotel quickly. Spending a day in Malgrat de Mar wasn’t something in our pre-holiday plans but it is a great place to visit.

Spending a day in Malgrat de Mar

Malgrat de Mar is part of Catalonia on the Costa Brava area of Spain. The town dates back to the 13th century and is now an important part of the tourism industry. There are three beaches, plenty of historic sights, parks and natural places and a quaint town to walk around.

Spending a day in Malgrat de Mar – The Town

The town in Malgrat de Mar is so pretty. Think narrow streets, quaint multi colour buildings and cobble squares. There are plenty of shops to look around including mini supermarkets and tourist shops. The leather shops are amazing and definitely worth a trip for.

The streets regularly open out in to squares, usually full of cafes and restaurants. The majority of them have outside seating areas. Even on a grey and cloudy day sitting outside with a cold drink and olives in the square is a picturesque rest.

I love all of the different colour houses you find whilst spending a day in Malgrat de Mar. I especially adore all of the balconies on them.

Spending a day in Malgrat de Mar – Parc del Castell

One of the main sights to see whilst spending a day in Malgrat de Mar is Parc del Castell. It is a tower with a park on a hill over looking Malgrat de Mar.

To get to the top there is an elevator, it looks quite precarious but it is a smooth ride.

The tower is a former defensive building that has been repurposed as a community open space. You can walk around the tower but can’t go inside of it.

If, like us, you’re unfortunate to be there on a bad weather day it is still a lovely walk. The pathway has gorgeous plants and flowers along side it.

And you have stunning views over Malgrat de Mar, from here you can see the entire town and sea. We spent ages up here just looking out at everything.

Spending a day in Malgrat de Mar – other sights

There are plenty of other sights to see whilst spending a day in Malgrat de Mar. I won’t show you them all but will show you a few of our favourites.

The Parish Church of Sant Nicolau is a beautiful church in one of the squares. I love how imposing it is against the terracotta and white buildings surrounding it.

The Torre de la Vidua de can Sala Villa is a beautifully ornate building that houses the towns municipal archives. I really love the balconies and carvings around the whole building. Plus have you see the stripes of colour?

Spending a day in Malgrat de Mar - walking around the town

If you are in the Catalonia area it is well worth spending a day in Malgrat de Mar. The train station is in the centre so getting there and back to your base is easy. The town is flat and really easy to walk around. It is very picturesque with lots of things to see as you walk around. I do wish we had better weather as I would love to see the parks there and spend some time on the beaches.

  1. Those buildings are so beautiful! This place looks like it has so much character and it looks like a gorgeous place to just sit and take it all in!

  2. that elevator looks like a roller coaster! sounds like a memorable visit altogether — love the balconies 🙂

  3. I love the look of that elevator, at first I thought it was a rollercoaster. We event visited Costa Brava but it does look pretty.

  4. Such a shame when you travel all that way and the weather isn’t so good. We had the same in the South of France a couple of weeks ago. It’s still great to explore anywhere new though. Mich x

  5. What a pretty place! I haven’t been to Catalunia but I really want to go – the history of that region is so unique.

  6. Although it is a shame that you did not have the best weather, I love the look of Torre de la Vidua de can Sala Villa, which is such a beautiful work of architecture as is the church you visited as well.
