October half term saw me and Ellie jetting off on another adventure. (I know, I know terrible blogger only just writing about it now!) Ellie is in year 10 now at school and working hard so needs time out to relax now and again. I had been quite poorly over the summer with thyroid disease, the symptoms of that and the other health problems it brings. So I was in desperate need of getting away from everything and doing nothing in the sunshine. This adventure took us to the Canary Islands again for some winter sunshine. Here is our Puerto Rico Gran Canaria holiday diary.

Puerto Rico Gran Canaria holiday diary – day one

Day one starts with a 6.25am flight from Manchester airport to Las Palmas airport. The flight is about four and a half hours. Our transfer was already arranged with Hoppa and we weren’t waiting too long for our coach to set off.

The area around Las Palmas airport in Gran Canaria is quite hilly, dry and baron. But as you move away from the area towards the towns it becomes much prettier and lush looking.

By early afternoon we were checked in to our hotel in Puerto Rico and in our room. I have a full review of the hotel coming up later in the week but, as you can see here, the view from our room is pretty idyllic.

Our first afternoon was spent unpacking, pottering around the hotel and sitting in the sunshine with a cool drink. After such an early start we were both tired so a little afternoon siesta was needed too! Waking up just in time for dinner and a stunning sunset over the valley.

After eating we decided to have a walk around the area and see what we could find. As it is October the sun sets quite early so even at 8ish you can see the Puerto Rico valley lit up in the dark.

Puerto Rico Gran Canaria holiday diary – day two

After our long day travelling the day before we had a really good nights sleep and were up and at breakfast for it opening. And by 9am we were laid on a sun lounger by the hotel pool. Our day was spent sunbathing, reading and eating.

Getting out for the night a little earlier means seeing this view over the Puerto Rico valley.

Walking a little further from the hotel this night we found the Europa Shopping Centre, a complex of shops, bars and restaurants. So we spent a couple of hours in one of the bars that had free wifi. Apparently teenagers absolutely must have a wifi connection at least once a day!

Puerto Rico Gran Canaria holiday diary – day three

Day three of our Puerto Rico Gran Canaria holiday diary and another relaxing by the pool day. We both did a lot of reading our kindles and I slept quite a bit too.

We were treated to another gorgeous sunset as we were getting ready to go out that night. The sky almost looks like it is on fire and set against the white buildings and palm trees makes it even more spectacular.

Puerto Rico Gran Canaria holiday diary – day four

Day four and I am feeling less tired and we are both ready for a change of scenery. A quick (€5) taxi ride will get you down to Puerto Rico beach and marina.

We had lunch and an icy cold drink in a cafe over looking the marina and a walk along the sea wall.

A taxi ride back up the hill got us to the hotel for a few hours of sunbathing before dinner and heading to the Europa centre again for a couple of hours.

Puerto Rico Gran Canaria holiday diary – day five

Day five of our Puerto Rico Gran Canaria holiday diary and it’s another pool day for me and Ellie. After five days relaxing in the sun I am feeling SO much better here. We spent the day reading, talking and laughing.

After another walk around we had a couple of hours in the Europa centre. Ellie is super happy she has free wifi to snapchat her friends again!

Puerto Rico Gran Canaria holiday diary – day six

Day six is the last full day of our Puerto Rico Gran Canaria holiday diary. We had another day enjoying relaxing around the pool.

And our last night had another amazing sunset as we were going out. As a last night treat we had dinner away from the hotel in one of the restaurants in the Europa Centre.

It was a great end to our super relaxing getaway.

Our transfer coach came for us at 4.30am so it was another early start. Everything ran to time and by mid afternoon we were home again disappointed it was all over.

Puerto Rico Gran Canaria holiday diary – round up

Our Puerto Rico Gran Canaria holiday diary is a lot different to our other holiday diaries like Lanzarote or Mallorca. We are usually out of the hotel exploring, day tripping and sight seeing. I always love those holidays, I love immersing myself in new cultures and seeing new sights. But, after my illness, this was a much needed total relaxation holiday. I wouldn’t want a holiday doing this every time but sometimes you just need to lay on a sun lounger and do nothing for a week don’t you?

Have you ever been to Puerto Rico in Gran Canaria before? What do you like to do when you’re  on holiday?

  1. Sometimes we just need a holiday where we can relax, rest and recharge our bodies and mind. I am loving the photos of the sunset, what a pretty place this is.

  2. I have very fond memories of holidaymaking in Gran Canaria with my parents when I was a kid – we always had a fantastic time! I couldn’t agree more that sometimes you do just need time to sit and chill on a sunlounger for a week, that R&R is invaluable! Puerto Rico beach and marina looks well worth exploring! Thanks for sharing your pics with us!

    • Aw how lovely Abbey, it was our first time in Gran Canaria but would love to go back again and see more of it. It really is invaluable to completely have a week out and totally relax sometimes.

    • We’ve had snow here again the last few days so I’m ready to jet back off somewhere warm again! I couldn’t believe how quiet the beach was, so strange!

  3. It looks like a lovely week – I agree that sometimes you really just need to concentrate on relaxing! Glad you had a good one!

  4. Napping and reading….The dream! Looked like you all had a fab time! Glad Ellie found WiFi too ha ha!

    • It was the dream! And just what we needed too. Ah me too, it would have been a loooooong week if she hadn’t haha!

  5. Seem like you had a very nice and interesting trip. I love the place but for the pool, shall I say, i looks small or it was just so crowded by the pool side chairs. But totally, I hope I can visit Puerto Rico this year too.

    • Ah there were two pools and this one is the smaller one. There was a much bigger one at the other side of our hotel room. Puerto Rico is beautiful and I definitely recommend visiting if you can.

  6. Looks like an amazing place to visit and travel too! I would love to go there and see the sites!
