Last month we decided to finally cross visiting Holy Island off our wishlist. I knew there were a few other places I wanted to visit whilst we were up there so decided to make a little holiday out of it. As is always the case in the school summer holidays, prices in the hotels and BnB’s are super expensive. So remembering a post I had read on Beccas blog I got a discount code from her and began looking on Airbnb. Simonside Cottage in Rothbury, Northumberland instantly jumped out at me and before I knew it, it was booked! So today I am sharing my first Airbnb experience at Simonside Cottage in Rothbury.

My first Air BnB Experience at Simonside Cottage in Rothbury – booking experience

This is my first time using Airbnb but it is so easy to use. Simply search the area you want to be in, the dates and how many people are going and search. You can narrow it down to price, amenities and whether you would like a full house or private room. Clicking in to each property gives you details about the owner and property along with house rules and amenities. There are some places you can instantly book and others you need to contact  the owner first.

I was able to instantly book Simonside Cottage, but I did send the owner a quick message to let him know and introduce myself. It just seems the polite thing to do and I’m terribly British like that.

Payment is taken straight away and each property has its own cancellation terms.

As I joined Airbnb through a referral code I got £30 off my first stay, you can too if you sign up here.

I had spoken to the owner before our stay and a meeting time was agreed. As this was my first Airbnb experience arriving at the cottage I was a little nervous. It is really quite strange meeting someone to get keys for their house. The owner is lovely though and after a quick chat and run through of things I needed to know he was on his way.

Simonside Cottage is a quaint and cozy 2 bedroom cottage. Whilst it isn’t high end it is incredibly clean and has all the modern fittings and the rustic decor keeps the features of the property.

The front porch leads in to a large living room / dining room. I love the crochet blankets, we had these at my mums house when we were younger. They are so cozy to wrap up in on a night. I’m also a big fan of the bookcase which has all genres of books, travel guides and maps.

The living room also has THE most amazing fireplace. I didn’t try lighting the fire as to be honest I wouldn’t know where to start with it, but it looks amazing even unlit.

Through the living room is a galley kitchen. It has everything you will need whilst you are staying plus some extra touches like tea, coffee, milk and even olive oil.

There is an open staircase in the kitchen that leads upstairs. The listing does say the property isn’t suitable for young children and I think the staircase is why. Both me and Ellie loved it though.

Upstairs there is a double and single bedroom. Both have comfy, clean beds with thick duvets, wardrobes and drawers and each has a pile of clean towels. My only complaint is there is only one small mirror in the little bedroom. Which for two girls just isn’t enough!

And finally the bathroom. It is really modern and again it has everything you might need and is full of toiletries.

My first Air BnB Experience at Simonside Cottage in Rothbury – The views

Simonside Cottage is pretty much in the middle of nowhere and the location means the views are amazing.

We also found llamas in the field behind the cottage! They aren’t very friendly though and do run away if you get too close.

My first Air BnB Experience at Simonside Cottage in Rothbury – Final thoughts

Simonside Cottage was the perfect place for us and made my first Airbnb experience brilliant. It is a great base for exploring Northumberland as it is close to Alnwick, Lindesfarne, Seahouses, Farne Islands and Bamburgh. Whilst the cottage isn’t the most modern, it is clean, has everything you need and is definitely a home away from home. The views from the cottage are stunning and for us being in the middle of nowhere was just what we needed.

If we were to visit Northumberland again we would definitely stay here again.

  1. I haven’t tried Airbnb before but I heard they do provide good accommodations. Loved the place btw. Looks so comforting and refreshing.

    • Our experience with them was amazing, I have heard odd horror stories. As long as you check the ratings and know exactly what you’re getting (some places rent out just the bedroom and they live in the house with you) I recommend trying it.

  2. What a gorgeous place to stay! We haven’t yet tried Air bnb but I do keep meaning to try it. We are going away in October so I think I will look and use your code – thank you!

  11. I am glad you had a nice stay. My first time using airbnb we were kind of nervous about it but the Penthouse apartment in Barcelona turned out to be awesome!

    • i was so worried about it in the build up to it. A penthouse in Barcelona sounds amazing! Air BnB is definitely something I’ll look at abroad now I’ve done it here.

  12. This Simonside cottage looks like a great homestay when visiting Rothbury. I have never stayed in AirBnB style but would really look for it and also this first time discount is great.

  13. That cottage is GORGEOUS. I’ve never used Airbnb before because I’m such a paranoid person and don’t know how I feel about living in someone else’s house while they are away. I have to say that your experience is convincing me to try it at least once! (Especially if it ends up as beautiful as that cottage).

    • It’s a stunning cottage isn’t it. It is an odd experience, especially in the build up to it. Once you’re in you soon forget it is / was someones home. (Our cottage isn’t lived in any more, he has kept it to Air BnB it)

  14. It looks like you had a great first experience with airBnB. I have only used it twice and the experiences were ok. The second time I was with a group of friends, in Spain, and a water pipe broke, flooding the downstairs neighbor. It wasn’t very pleasant as one of us had to stay home and wait for the plumber to come.

    • Oh no! That doesn’t sound like a good experience. I really hope if you try it again you have a better stay

  15. Friends of mine rave about air bnb. I need to try it out myself. Looks like you went to a really beautiful part of the country and made some amazing memories on this trip.

    • A lot of mine did and I resisted for a while. I’m glad I finally tried it out myself and will Air BnB again now. Northumberland is a stunning part of the country, would love to go back and see more of it.

    • Such a gorgeous cottage isn’t it. I was nervous, especially getting there and meeting the owner. So glad we did it and we will be doing it again!

    • I was quite nervous too, I think it’s the thought of being in someones house. I really recommend it though, especially if you are renting the full house and know it will be just yourselves.

  16. That sounds like an amazing and very calming experience for your first Airbnb. I know sometimes most people use them in the city especially. And that one had an amazing view inside of a brick wall haha.

    • I can see why they are so popular in cities, it would be so much cheaper than city centre hotels. We loved our first experience and would definitely use Air BnB again.

    • We did have a great first Air BnB experience and found an amazing cottage to stay in. You should definitely try it out for yourself.

    • I’m definitely going to start looking in to it when travelling abroad too, the only thing that puts me off is the language barrier when dealing with the house owners. It does give you such a unique and homely experience

  17. I’ve actually never used Air BnB before but I will definitely be using it soon – I think it sounds like a great service! I could do with a break soon too!! xx

  18. I’ve actually never used Air BnB before but I will definitely be using it soon – I think it sounds like a great service! I could do with a break soon too!! xx

  19. Definitely looks beautiful there and the perfect sort of place to stay when visiting areas like that! Not sure how I’d feel about basically living in someone else’s house but I would try it out!

    • It is an odd feeling, I was much happier knowing the house was all ours. I don’t think I’d feel as comfortable sharing it with the owner like some do.

    • It’s so exciting and a bit nerve-racking the first time isn’t it. Nashville is an amazing place to be going to one though!
