The Silence by Katharine Johnson – The blurb

Doctor Abby Fenton has a rewarding career, a loving family, an enviable lifestyle – and a secret that could destroy everything.

When human remains are discovered in the grounds of an idyllic Tuscan holiday home she is forced to confront the memories she has suppressed until now and relive the summer she spent at the villa in 1992. A summer that ended in tragedy. The nearer she gets to the truth the closer she comes to losing her sanity.

In order to hold onto the people she loves most, she must make sure they never discover what she did. But the reappearance of someone else from that summer threatens to blow her secret wide open.

The Silence by Katharine Johnson – review

The Silence introduces us to Dr Abby Fenton and her happy family. Very quickly you learn Abby is hiding something terrible from her past. The story jumps between the present and a fateful summer in Tuscany in 1992. Unfortunately Abby can’t remember exactly what happened in Italy as she has suppressed the memories. As the story is told from both the present and past it eventually meets and unfolds in to exactly how the tragedy happened and who exactly was to blame.

The Silence is a thriller, so some parts are very tense. Suspense builds up throughout the story in to a very thrilling surprise ending. There are shocks, plot twists throughout, touching moments and an ending you definitely won’t be able to guess whilst reading.

I really love all of the characters in the book and knowing both teenage and adult Abby really endears you to her.

Not knowing what the events of the past are until the very end is a really unique way of telling the story. It kept me reading and wanting more right to the end of the book.

I have really enjoyed this from start to finish and will be looking out for more from Katharine Johnson.

I am giving The Silence by Katharine Johnson 4.5 / 5 stars
